TROUBLE WITH A CAPITAL ‘T’

Donald Trump’s bashing of Mexicans could have CNBCU breaking out the Tylenol.

When Donald Trump threw his hat into the ring to be President, he immediately began to bash immigrants from Mexico “who have lot of problems” and are “bringing those problems to us.”  He continued saying that “they’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists.” While the crowd cheered, swift action took place and it continues to unfold.

The swift action came from Univision, the largest Spanish network.

A few weeks prior to this outburst, Univision signed a contract to work with Trump to carry the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant on its’ network.  After the outburst, it took Univision a week to see what they’re options were.

And then the network severed all ties with Trump after his remarks. “The Miss USA Pageant” was slated to go on in a few weeks.

Now Univision will not carry anything by Trump.  The decision was made by Univision president and CEO Randy Falco.  He considered the views of both his Spanish-speaking audience and his employee base which is 80% Hispanic.

In a statement, Univision responded, “At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country,” the company said. “We will not be airing the Miss USA Pageant on July 12 or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization.”

The deal would have Univision co-produce and broadcast the show for five years; now it’s damaged goods.

Which makes this a very big pickle for the pageant’s co-owners Comcast NBC Universal (CNBCU).  The network is still weighing in their options on whether or not Trump will be host of “The Apprentice” franchise because, since he decided to run for President of the United States, the network might figure out how to do the show without Trump.

But there lies another problem: are they willing to put Telemundo and/or NBC Universo (formerly mun2) through the ringer by airing the pageant?

In 2013, Telemundo made a then-new promotional campaign which is not only drawing attention to the network, but the ratings are starting to take off, while NBC Universo was mun2 (mun-dos, a play on words on the Telemundo name and the number 2) and they relaunched on Super Bowl Sunday this year.

And adding the Pageant or anything owned by Trump would probably erase whatever gains that those networks have made.  It could be as disastrous as moving Jay Leno to 10pm.

And now it is damaged goods.

Christian de la Fuente and Roselyn Sanchez, both popular actors in the Hispanic world, also quit. They were slated to be co-hosts

Meantime, Trump has gotten nasty by threatening a lawsuit against Univision and banning Univision employees from using his golf course in Florida –five miles from where the network’s Miami offices are located.  And Univision must have their ducks in a row because they are relatively calm in this storm.  CNBCU might cut ties –even if temporarily- with Trump because he is running for president and him being on that network might give him an unfair advantage over airtime.
